Adelaide Weather and Climate Information for Visitors
Overview
Adelaide in South Australia has a Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny weather for most of the year - a situation which has lead it to become one of the country's most famous wine-growing regions. The region itself is responsible for more than half of all Australian wine production due to its wide variety of grapes and vineyards containing them. Adelaide is actually statistically the driest of all Australia's capital cities with the rain being unreliable, light and infrequent throughout various times of the year. The city also goes through arid periods with high spikes in temperatures; it is not uncommon for the daytime temperature to reach or exceed 40°C (104°F). Due to factors such as this, Adelaide is a city of stark weather contrasts with heat waves in the hottest periods giving way to frosts in the colder months.
Temperatures and Rainfall
As mentioned above, Adelaide's Summers are consistently hot and have proven to be ranked among the hottest of all Australia's capitals, with a record fifteen days straight of temperatures over 35 degrees celsius reached at one stage. Adelaide's seasons are not divided into a distinct four; it is more similar to a long Autumn with significant cold and hot spikes at each end which signify the arrival of Winter and Summer, respectively. In terms of yearly temperature averages, Adelaide's maximum is approximately 22.3°C (72.1°F), while the minimum resides around 12.2°C (54°F).
Rainfall is mainly focused around the colder months and is infrequent during Summer.
Seasons
Adelaide is relatively mild in all but the extreme periods of Summer and Winter, making it a highly pleasant city to visit for the majority of the year. The lack of excessive heat or cold makes it an ideal destination for outdoor activity as you will seldom feel a chill or work up an excessive sweat. This gives an approximately 8 month window in which the weather will be consistently pleasant, giving potential travellers a huge range of time in which to visit and enjoy the lovely sights the so-called "City of Churches" has to offer.
Summer
Summers in Adelaide can be especially hot, leading to two main climate hazards that can occur - sunburn and heat exhaustion. On the days where the Summer temperature pushes past 40 degrees, be sure to keep yourself hydrated or stay inside and utilise air conditioning. Despite the occasional extreme day, most people find Summers in Adelaide more pleasant than those in other capital cities as Adelaide experiences the lowest level of humidity of any other Australian city! It is recommended to save outdoor activities during the early morning and the evening during the hottest Summer days. The hot temperatures make for a great excuse to enjoy the waterways and oceans that surround the city, however; swimming with dolphins is one of the most popular pastimes for visitors during this season.
Autumn
The rolling hills that surround Adelaide lead to an explosion of colour as the deciduous trees begin to shed their leaves and blanket the countryside with a myriad of red, brown and yellow hues that make for spectacular viewing. The nearby Barossa Valley - an extremely popular tourist destination in the region due to its high standard of delicious wine production - is a prime example of Adelaide's Autumn beauty. The street of Stirling in Adelaide is one of the best places within the actual city to see these trees lined up and putting on an amazing show of colour. Autumn is a season with a very low amount of rainfall, averaging only around 6 days of rain per month, meaning outdoor activities are perfectly suited to this season.
Winter
Snowfall will rarely, if ever, fall in Adelaide during the Winter as the temperatures seldom go below zero degrees celsius. Bursts of rain and frost can occur, but the Winters in Adelaide are continually getting warmer and dryer to the point that it is still a fairly pleasant season to travel to the city despite the low temperatures. Evening temperatures in Winter average a low of 7 degrees celsius, so proper clothing will be required in order to stay comfortable; a jacket and other mid-level Winter clothing should be more than sufficient, with layered gear recommended as the temperature in the middle of the day can still approach the high teens, making the ability to peel off a layer especially valuable. Light frost can occur during this season but will usually disappear outside the early hours of the morning.
Spring
An amazing time of the year in and around Adelaide to experience outdoor activities, Spring brings to life all the greenery that the region has to offer and puts it on full display; this is the peak time of the year for winery and valley tours. Rainfall is fairly low while the days are generally sunny and pleasant; nights can be brisk with an average of less than half the peak daily temperature not uncommon. These fine, sunny days provide the perfect weather for a cruise down the Murray River or one of South Australia's other famous waterways. Spring is often said to reflect the attitude and demeanour of the people of Adelaide - "a warm place with warm people!"
